Barrett Willoughby papers, 1900-1958.

This collection consists of extensive research notes on Sitka, Ketchikan, trolling, mirages, and other Alaskan subjects. There are copies of the manuscripts for Willoughby's works: "Mirage", "Ticket to Ketchikan", "Annals of the Sea", "The Shadows of Attu", "The Golden Totem", and "Spawn of the North". There is an extensive collection of photographs, some taken by Father Hubbard in The Land of Ten Thousand Smokes, some taken by whaling captain Louis Lane, and some of early Alaska and the Klondike.

Kathleen Eloisa Rockwell was born on October 14, 1876 in Junction City, Kansas. She lived in Spokane, Valdaraiso, and in New York City, where she was a chorus girl. She moved back to the west coast, performing in Spokane and Seattle before moving north to the Yukon to take advantage of the opportunities provided by the Klondike gold rush. Throughout the years Rockwell pursued various business and personal interests in the far north and the Pacific northwest. She died in Oregon in 1957. ...

Born in 1888, Bernard Hubbard demonstrated a love of exploration as a youth. He attended St. Ignatius College and Santa Clara University, and entered the Jesuit order in 1908. In 1926 Hubbard returned to Santa Clara as a professor of Greek, German, and geology. He began exploring the Alaskan wilderness in 1927, financing his trips with proceeds from lectures describing his adventures.
